Mobile v Satellite Phone Tech

The earthquake disaster in Nepal has been shocking on many levels but one thing is clear.  Mobile phones are fast becoming useless outdated tech.

The network was completely wiped out in Katmandu and surrounding areas making it impossible for people, authorities, victims and families to communicate on any level.

There are strangely only a few providers but this tech must be waiting in the wings for its world wide ‘debut’.  Iridium, Pivotel, Thuraya and the new Inmarsat are about it.

Interesting is the fact that the phones and service providers are almost at the same cost as mobile providers and give both phone and data services at comparitive costs.
